 Party Tips:

It's important to party safely - drugs and alcohol may cause you to take risks that you hadn't planned to take.

Here are some tips to make partying safer:

 Using 'G'? (GHB, liquid ecstasy)

GHB can create feelings of inner peace, happiness, pleasure touching, and relaxation. The risky thing about GHB is that there is little difference between a dose that can give you a good high and an overdose that can cause harmful and serious side effects.

GHB is not a good drug if you are looking to get really high, or if you tend to try to take more and more of a drug to maximize your experience. If you are okay with the middle point of being high, and can leave it at that, you may be okay with GHB.

Use GHB with friends who have experience with the drug and know what they are doing. If you have no experience with GHB you might want to try something else.

Start with no more than 1/2 teaspoon/2ml - and wait at least half an hour (an hour is better) before doing only a little more.

Don't use GHB with downers - especially alcohol. This will greatly increase the chance of overdose.

Consider not using GHB if you have any heart problems, high blood pressure, or seizures.

Be with friends who will take care of you if you experience harmful side effects, or lose your sense of where you are or how to protect yourself from harm.

Try to buy from a reliable supplier whose goods you like or your friends have tried. If you don't have one, shop around.

 Using 'e'? (ecstasy)

Ecstasy can lead to warm, loving relaxation; an intense, energetic, spiritual high, and can connect people freely and openly with each other or promote deep inner thinking and analysis. The main risk with 'e' use is dehydration and overheating. You can use 'e' and reduce your risks.

Sip a small bottle of water every hour.
Take breaks from dancing.

Take smaller amounts of 'e' when it's your first time, or a new supply, or when you're taking other drugs - like HIV medications.

Avoid mixing 'e' with alcohol. It can affect the nature and quality of your high.

Avoid mixing 'e' with Viagra. If you do, reduce the dose of each (1/2 normal dosage). If you get an erection that lasts longer than 4 hours go to an emergency room immediately.

Less is more. Large or frequent doses can increase the side effects without adding to the experience.

Try to buy from a reliable supplier whose goods you like or your friends have tried. If you don't have one, shop around.

 Using 'k'? (ketamine, special k, vitamin k)

Ketamine is an anesthetic. It can make you feel outside of yourself, can effect your visual and auditory senses, and make movement difficult. An important consideration with 'k' is that it can put you in a state where you are unable to talk, move, or act in your own defense (k-hole). This can put you at risk for sexual assault. You can reduce your risk while using 'k':

Be with friends who will take care of you if you experience harmful side effects, or lose your sense of where you are or how to protect yourself from harm.

If you are using 'k' it is good to designate a sober friend to keep an eye on you.

Avoid mixing 'k' with alcohol, barbituates, Valium, and other depressants. Mixing Ketamine with other drugs is not recommended and will not likely enhance your experience.

If you inject 'k' into your muscle or vein, find out how to inject safely. Don't share needles. Use a new needle every time.

Try to buy from a reliable supplier whose goods you like or your friends have tried. If you don't have one, shop around.

Keep a condom with you. Use it.

 Injecting Drugs?

If you are injecting drugs (such as cocaine, ketamine, heroine, steroids) it is important that you learn how to inject safely. Unsafe injection practices put you at risk for HIV, Hepatitis B and C, swollen skin and skin infections, blood clots and heart infections. You can inject drugs and reduce your risk for these complications:

Don't share needles.

Use a new needle ever time. Free needles are available at needle exchange programs in Toronto, and you can buy needles legally in drug stores.

Fix in the cleanest space possible.
Wash your hands and clean your spoon before you prep. your hit.
Clean the site with an alcohol swab before you inject.
Use sterile water to mix your hit.
Always filter your hit.

Never inject on the head or neck, the groin area, the genitals, or the inside of the wrist. Avoid injecting in the legs.

Get vaccinated against Hepatitis B.

Keep a condom with you. Use it.

 Mixing Drugs?

Sometimes people mix drugs as a normal course of the party. Other times, we purposely mix drugs to try to obtain a desired effect. [sextasy :o)] Some of us enjoy taking recreational drugs, but are also using health related medications, like anti-HIV drugs.

Whatever the reason, if you are mixing drugs take the time to get educated on the risks and benefits of different drug combinations. Some combinations can be pleasurable. Others can make you sick or be fatal. Here are some initial tips...

 Don't mix Viagra and Poppers.

If you mix Viagra and ecstasy, use half the regular dose of each drug.

Viagra and 'e' together can cause priapism, a condition where you cannot lose your erection. If you have an erection longer than 4 hours go to an emergency department immediately. Erections longer than 6 hours can cause permanent damage.

Don't mix 'g' (ghb) with alcohol or other downers.

Don't mix 'e' with antidepressants (esp. MAOI's like Parnate, Aurorix).

Avoid 'e', 'k', or speed (meth) if you are taking Ritonavir.
If you are taking anti-HIV medications you should consult with your physician before taking any recreational drugs. You can also get information anonymously by calling CATIE at 1-800-263-1638.

If you mix HIV meds with recreational drugs, use smaller amounts of the recreational drugs initially and wait an hour before taking more.

 OD? (overdose)

One of the risks of drug use is an overdose (OD). You can reduce your risk for an OD by learning as much as you can about the drugs you are taking and then using those drugs in a way that reduces your risk for harm. You can help a friend who has OD'd by getting educated on how to respond.

Learn about harm reduction. Harm reduction is the philosophy that there are benefits and risks to drug use. The goal is to maximize the benefits and minimize the risks. The choice of whether or not to use drugs is yours.

GHB-OD (also 'downers' - heroin and alcohol)

  • passed out (can't wake them up or keep them awake)
  • hardly breathing or not breathing at all
  • no or weak pulse (check wrist and neck)

E-OD (also 'uppers' - crystal and coke)

  • difficulty breathing
  • racing or irregular pulse
  • pain and numbness in chest, arms and neck
  • hot dry skin
  • uncontrollable twitching
  • passed out

Call an ambulance immediately.
Try not leaving the person alone.
Never give more drugs to counteract.
