Gender Neutral Washrooms at ACT effective Thursday January 8, 2009

In keeping with our commitment to equity and accessibility, the AIDS Committee of Toronto (ACT) has designated washrooms on the third floor of 399 Church Street to be “gender-neutral”.

    What is a gender-neutral washroom?
A gender-neutral washroom is not designated male or female, and is therefore accessible to everyone, regardless of sex or gender identity. It is no different than the washroom facilities most people have in their own home.

Most gender-neutral washrooms, including ours, are equipped with interior door locks to allow for single use and to ensure safety.

    Why gender-neutral?
When using public washrooms with a gender designation, people who are perceived to be in the “wrong” washroom can feel uncomfortable and can even be at risk. This includes transsexual and transgendered persons, or anyone whose gender expression or identity is not considered the norm.

Gender-neutral washrooms can also serve as family washrooms, allowing parents with young children to accompany their child, regardless of gender.

Aside from the gender-neutral aspect, single-use washrooms are also beneficial for other reasons. People with certain disabilities or health conditions may require a single-use washroom to administer medication in private.

What if I don’t want to share a washroom with men/women?
Gender-neutral washrooms are equipped with interior door locks to allow for single-use, meaning you don’t have to share the washroom with anyone.

If you feel uncomfortable using a gender-neutral washroom, the facilities on the fourth floor will remain designated “male” and “female”.

To access the gender-neutral washrooms, please ask for a key at the 4th floor reception desk.
