HIV/AIDS: It isn't over

HIV/AIDS isn't over.

Every day, two more people in Toronto are newly infected with HIV, the virus that causes AIDS.

HIV/AIDS now affects more and more communities in our city.

But gay and bisexual men continue to bear the burden of HIV/AIDS. We still make up the majority of new HIV infections in the city (over 60% of all new infections last year), and almost three quarters of all people living with HIV/AIDS in Toronto are gay and bisexual men.

For over 25 years, gay men have have been leaders in the fight against HIV/AIDS. We've taken great steps to reduce HIV transmission in our community.

But we can't stop.

Whether we are HIV-positive, HIV-negative or we haven't been tested for HIV recently, it's up to each and every one of us to protect ourself and our sex partners from HIV transmission.

Now more than ever it's important that we join with other men and say we won't stop fucking safely until HIV/AIDS is over.

Whether you are HIV negative or HIV positive: use condoms and water-based lube when you fuck.

Get regular check-ups for sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

Don't assume that your partner has the same HIV status as you do.

For Pride and for the rest of the year, take pride in yourself -- and take care of each other.
