Annual Report 2008-2009
Annual ReportOur Annual Report for 2008-2009 is now available in hard copy from our offices, or you can browse it online on our website.

Now that we are coming to the end of our current strategic plan, this report illustrates how we have accomplished the goals we set out for ACT five years ago.

U.S. travel ban to be lifted, but not yet!
You may have heard that the U.S. government is lifting the travel and immigration ban on people with HIV.  Before you pack your bags, read this important information from the HIV/AIDS Legal Clinic of Ontario (HALCO):

The U.S. government has enacted a regulatory change [
PDF] which will repeal the ban on persons living with HIV from traveling and immigrating to the United States.  The change will come into effect January 4, 2010.  Until January 4, 2010, the travel ban is in full effect for HIV-positive visitors, temporary workers, and foreign students.  The U.S. government has, however, announced that it is not enforcing the ban with respect to permanent residence applications ("green cards").

For information about applying for waivers and other information about entering the United States, see
this website.

For information about the ramifications of the repeal of the HIV immigration ban, see
this U.S.-based resource.

If you still have questions, please contact HALCO at 416-340-7790 or

New in the ACT Library
We are constantly adding new information and tools to our publicly-accessible HIV/AIDS library, the largest of its kind in North America.

This month, we have added new bibliographies to help you start your search for information.  They list books, articles and web resources from the ACT Library and different websites.

You can see the ACT Library bibliographies
on our website, including these new ones: Looking for information on other topics?  Contact the ACT Library at library@actoronto.org

What happened to the ACT sign on the building?
Some of you have been wondering why we took the ACT sign down from our building at Church and Carlton Streets over the summer.  Some have asked if we are moving, or are planning to move.

The answer is a resounding no!  We are still here at 399 Church Street and we have no plans to move!

We removed the sign as it contained our old logo.  We are hoping at some point to put something up to identify the building more clearly, but in these tight economic times we didn't feel that we could justify the expense for a new sign in the current fiscal year.

So the next time someone asks what's up with the ACT sign, you can let them know.

Innovative condom pack launched
Getting HardACT's latest condom/lube pack targets gay men with tips for "Getting hard, staying hard."

Most condom packs provide tips for how to put a condom on.  ACT raises the bar by tackling an issue facing many older men in a high risk category for HIV infection. Erectile dysfunction affects an estimated 40% of men over the age of 40, and it is an issue for guys using drugs and alcohol as well.

This new pack, part of the 15th anniversary of Gay Men's Outreach, hits the streets in November.

Gay Men's Online Outreach Program
Paul McCarty-Johnston has joined ACT as our new Gay Men's Online Outreach Coordinator.  Paul has over 20 years experience with HIV education and prevention work, most recently with the AIDS Committee of London.

Paul began providing online interventions to gay and bisexual men in 2002.  Paul recently completed the production of the "Sexual Health Educator Internet Resource" manual for frontline workers across Ontario.

Paul will continue the ongoing work at ACT to develop online prevention strategies for HIV, hepatitis C, and other sexually transmitted infections - including poz prevention.  His online outreach activities will target the diverse communities of gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men - including trans men - via social and sexual networking sites.

Paul will also help revive and relaunch InterACTion, an online community forum on sexual health issues hosted by the Gay Guide Toronto website.  In its new format, InterACTion will take the form of a blog where ACT staff will regularly blog on a range of sexual health issues, and readers can post responses.

Fall 2009 Joint Volunteer Outreach Training
Two ACT programs - Gay Men's Outreach and Harm Reduction Outreach for Gay Youth and Men - welcomed 17 graduates from the volunteer training held this fall.

These outstanding volunteers have completed a total of more than 45 hours of training, and will represent ACT in outreach in bars, clubs, bathhouses, on the street and online.  Congratulations!

Condom Stuffing Parties
Ever wonder how ACT gets all those condoms stuffed with lube and safer sex information into the thousands of packages we distribute around the city?  It's all done by volunteers at our regular condom stuffing parties!

Our next few parties will be held on November 17th, December 1st and 15th, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at ACT on the fourth floor.  We provide food, refreshments and the occasional random prize draw.

Your help makes a difference!  For ongoing information, including party dates, please contact Duncan MacLachlan at

In-service workshop for volunteers: Trans 101
All volunteers of ACT and the Toronto People With AIDS Foundation (PWA) are invited to register for an in-service workshop on trans issues.

Trans and gender-variant people often experience higher HIV risk and vulnerability due to social stigma, discrimination and barriers to services.  This workshop establishes some common understanding around language and experience that can be used to better engage with trans people accessing services.

Advance registration is required.

HIV criminalization in Black communities
Black, African, and Caribbean people living with HIV or AIDS are increasingly charged for not informing their partners of their HIV status before sex. In fact, a large number of those charged are from our community and we are unsure why.

Join the Black Coalition for AIDS Prevention (BlackCAP) for a community discussion and to hear from a number of prominent speakers on the issue.

Thursday, November 19, 2009
7:00 to 9:00 p.m.

155 College Street, Room 610
