Let's talk about sex!
You may have heard that the provincial government recently
announced plans to implement new sexual health education curriculum in Ontario schools as
part of an update of physical health education in elementary schools across the
province. ACT supports the proposed curriculum update because it would
teach students about HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted infections earlier
(Grade 7). The inclusion of topics such as sexual orientation and gender
identity would also go a long way to alleviate the stigma and discrimination that places some individuals at greater risk of HIV infection. The provincial government has announced that it will
implement a revised curriculum update this fall, following
consultations with parents. ACT encourages community members to send
messages of support for the proposed curriculum update to their Member of Provincial Parliament and Leona Dombrowsky, Minister of
Education: ldombrowsky.mpp@liberal.ola.org |
ACT phasing out library services
 ACT is phasing out its
library services to respond to changing information needs in the community.
Created over 20 years ago as a place where people could access up-to-date
HIV-related information, ACT library usage has shifted in recent years.
As fewer people visit the library to access materials, demand for online information
is increasing. These trends were confirmed in a Library needs assessment
conducted by ACT in 2009 among service users and community partners.
In response to these changing needs, and in an effort to streamline the way
information services are delivered, ACT will be closing its library program.
Access to books, audio-visual materials, periodicals and journals has now
ended, effective May 1, 2010. Winding down of the program will continue until
July 2, 2010.
For more information about these changes, please visit

Register for Spring Support Groups
Are you living with HIV/AIDS? Do you feel isolated or want
support? Consider joining one of ACT's facilitated peer support
groups. Short-term (10-week) support groups scheduled to start in
May 2010 include:
- Newly
Diagnosed Group: a discussion-based support group for those diagnosed with
HIV in the last one to two years.
- Living
with HIV Group: a discussion-based support group for those who consider
themselves neither newly-diagnosed nor long-term survivors.
- Art
Therapy: a support group where people living with HIV can share their
feelings and experiences through both art and discussion.
ACT also has three ongoing support groups for long-term
survivors of HIV/AIDS. Groups meet weekly on a continuous basis. These groups
are now open to new referrals. All of our support groups provide people living with
HIV/AIDS with a safe, supportive group environment in which to share their
feelings and experiences, to give and receive support, and to explore thoughts on
the future. Registration is now open! Please contact your
ACT case manager or counselor, or contact the HIV Health Promotion Coordinator
at 416-340-8484 ext. 283 or kmurzin@actoronto.org to register.

Fashion Cares on hold
Fashion Cares, last held on November 1, 2008, was a
resounding success - both critically and in its goal of raising much-needed
funds for the programs and services of ACT. After the last Fashion Cares, we
decided to place the event on hold and undertake a longer planning period,
given the economic downturn.
Early in 2010, ACT began its strategic planning process in order to identify
agency-wide directions for the upcoming five years. The new strategic plan will
be launched in fall 2010.
Strategic planning is an opportunity for ACT to engage with its stakeholders
and examine all of the work that we do - including our fundraising. The new
Strategic Plan will have implications for the ways in which we deliver programs
and services for those living with and at risk of HIV infection, and will also
include new ideas and directions for fundraising.
With this process underway, ACT will continue to hold off on decisions
regarding the next Fashion Cares until the new Strategic Plan is unveiled.
Meanwhile, ACT will be continuing to hold its other major fundraising events: the annual Scotiabank AIDS Walk for Life Toronto, and SNAP! - a
photographic art auction to held in early spring 2011.
More information about the future of Fashion Cares will become available later
in the year. Please visit the Fashion Cares website for more information.

Brand new look for the Scotiabank AIDS Walk for Life
We are proud to unveil the new look of the Scotiabank AIDS
Walk for Life! The Toronto-based award-winning advertising agency John St. has
presented us with this new modern brand, which will become the new face of the
fundraising event across the country. With all the advancements that have been made to extend and
improve the lives of people living with HIV/AIDS, we wanted to express the
sense of urgency we feel amidst growing apathy. HIV/AIDS is still with us,
still takes lives here in Toronto, and still has a devastating impact on people
who are living with the virus. With the new logo comes a renewed faith in what we do. The
message is simple: our brothers and sisters need our help, and we can't sit
this one out. So mark your calendars now! On Sunday, September 19, 2010:
Don't Just Stand There! Join the Scotiabank AIDS Walk for Life! For more information about the Toronto walk,

Sex Pigs: Belly up to the trough!
Many gay men are skilled at pushing the boundaries of sexual
pleasure. The "sex pig" phenomenon includes all kinds of activities
that are considered taboo.
What is the attraction of pig sex? What does it mean
to have healthy pig sex? How can nasty, dirty sex be safer? Come out to a community forum
hosted by ACT Gay Men's Outreach to hear what others think and to have your say! Monday, June 14, 2010 The 519 Community Centre
Auditorium 519 Church Street 7 to 8:30 p.m. For more information,
contact Duncan at dmaclachlan@actoronto.org or Paul at pjohnston@actoronto.org
