Gay Men's Outreach Coordinator

Job Description
Develops HIV/STI prevention and health promotion outreach activities targeted to diverse communities of gay and bisexual men, and other men who have sex with men. Specific duties and responsibilities will also include, but are not limited to the following and may be subject to change:
Community Development
- Develops strategic partnership opportunities with agencies, groups, clubs and businesses in order to promote the health of gay and bisexual men and other men who have sex with men.
- Stewards relationships with existing outreach venue partners and community businesses and agencies.
- Actively participates in the M2Men Network and other relevant networks and coalitions serving gay men and men who have sex with men.
- Identifies and responds to emerging community issues in HIV prevention through the development of innovative outreach education, health promotion and community development programs.
- Liaises with representatives of other related agencies to communicate information, resolve problems and develop partnership opportunities for outreach.
- Provides ACT resource materials and Program development experience to other agencies.
- Liaises with representatives of diverse ethno-cultural communities, AIDS service organizations and other social service agencies providing HIV prevention/health promotion education to coordinate efforts, improve understanding of current issues and reduce the spread of HIV.
- Develops and delivers SEXploration and other workshops, training, education opportunities and networking events.
Program Development
- Develops new outreach initiatives to address emerging needs.
- Identifies emerging issues in HIV prevention/sexual health education.
- Contributes to and/or leads prevention campaigns and resource development including dissemination.
- Collaborates with the Gay Men's Community Education Coordinator to coordinate the planning, development, implementation and evaluation of joint programming.
- Evaluates programs to ensure effectiveness and efficiency.
Outreach Coordination and Volunteer Management
- Delivers HIV prevention and sexual health information and referral services in bath houses, bars and other venues.
- Monitors statistical information on outreach contacts to identify current issues and ensure volunteers have outreach materials that meet client needs.
- Develops, recommends and implements workshops in a variety of venues and workshops for in-service training.
- Coordinates in-house production of condom-lube packs and other safer sex kits.
- Coordinates the maintenance of and proper stocking of community condom package dispenser bins.
- Liaises with managers of bath houses and bars to identify outreach spaces.
- Supervises volunteers, providing support skills development, motivation and performance evaluations. Schedules and assigns volunteers to Outreach activities, designs and implements volunteer training programs as well as, identifies the number of volunteers needed and develops a recruitment plan with Program Volunteer Manager.
- Creates communications to ensure volunteers have the information and resources to provide information and referral services. Designs and implements volunteer feedback/evaluation strategy. Co-ordinates volunteer appreciation events.
Administration and General Duties
- Maintains files of volunteer information, responds appropriately to inquiries, provides information as required.
- Participates on teams and external committees to communicate information, resolve problems and achieve the goals of the organization.
- Liaise with Communications Coordinator to develop and implement promotional campaigns including advertising flyers, condom inserts, provides written submissions to agency communication vehicles including e-bulletins, ED reports, newsletters and annual reports.
- In addition to compliance with all organizational policies and procedures, the incumbent is also expected to behave ethically, demonstrate competence in effective communication and team building, demonstrate effectiveness in working in a collaborative environment, and demonstrate confidence in decision-making and in building relationships.
Qualifications
- In-depth understanding of HIV/AIDS, STIs, Hepatitis C, safer sex and risk reduction principles and practices.
- Post secondary education relevant to the position and/or at least one (1) year practical or related experience (ie. health promotion, adult education or community development).
- Understanding of the diverse communities of men who have sex with men and related issues.
- Experience with program planning along with demonstrated understanding of internet-based chat rooms frequented by gay and bisexual men and other men who have sex with men.
- Direct experience (work or volunteer) within the gay community preferred.
- Demonstrates awareness, sensitivity and is committed to issues of diversity.
- Effective communication (verbal, written, and visual), presentation and negotiation skills.
- Effective organizational, planning and problems solving skills.
- Experience supervising, training and motivating volunteers.
- Demonstrated experience with and, an understanding of training and education methods.
