SUPERVISION

All AIDS Committee of Toronto (ACT) employees are to receive supervision with their manager. Frequency of supervision is to be no less than once per month and it may be more frequent (e.g., twice per month for employees on probation).

Supervision is a collaborative process. The purpose is to support and develop the employee's strengths and strategies in working with employees, clients and other service delivery systems in order to ensure quality service.

Supervision includes:

1. review of work plan activities;

2. review of strengths and ongoing professional needs;

3. provision of education, training, support and feedback;

4. review of accumulated overtime and vacation time;

5. provision of direction related to job responsibilities as required;

6. documentation of supervisory contact; and

7. ongoing and regular performance appraisals.

CLINICAL SUPERVISION

All ACT counsellors are to participate in monthly, individual clinical supervision with a qualified professional outside of ACT in order to improve practice through increased professional knowledge and skills, and to provide a forum where sensitive issues can be discussed without fear of recrimination. Sessions are typically one hour in length but may vary depending on the counsellors' needs.

Managers have the right to expect, and the obligation to provide, this type of support for other employees as the need becomes apparent.

Any issues identified through clinical supervision that place a client, volunteer, employee, or the agency at risk, must be reported to the Director of Support Services by the counsellor involved in order to determine the appropriate correctional steps.
