WORKPLACE VIOLENCE

The AIDS Committee of Toronto (ACT) is committed to providing a work environment that is free of violence. Acts or threatened acts of violence are not tolerated.

Violent behaviour includes:

1. actual or implied threat of harm to an individual or group of individuals;

2. having a weapon on one's person unless done so out of a recognized religious obligation or legally allowed to do so;

3. brandishing any object that could reasonably be construed as a weapon while on ACT property;

4. loud, angry or disruptive behaviour that clearly is not part of the typical work environment;

5. callous or intentional disregard for the physical safety or well-being of others;

6. wilful destruction of ACT or employee property;

7. commission of a violent felony or misdemeanour on ACT property; and

8. any other conduct that a reasonable person would perceive as constituting a threat of violence.

Employees or volunteers engaging in such acts are subject to sanctions up to and including immediate termination, and may also be civilly or criminally liable.

Employees or volunteers who are subjected to, witnesses, or have knowledge of actions that could be perceived as violent acts, or believe that such actions may occur, are required to report promptly to their supervisor or another manager.

Employees and volunteers can raise concerns and make reports to a supervisor and/or union steward as appropriate without fear of reprisal.
