WORKFARE

(Also see Community Placement Services, HR # 2-50.)

While ACT does not support the concept of workfare and upholds the principles that are outlined in HR policy 2 -70 as an agency we have an obligation and a desire to support our volunteers who find themselves operating within the framework dictated by OW/ODSP. We believe that our volunteers must not be punished as the result of ill conceived government policy and therefore will adopt the following guidelines as a way to standardize and regulate the process of writing letters for volunteers to receive the $100 monthly ODSP/OW Transportation Allowance.
  1. Determine if volunteer is on ODSP or OW. Both offer the Transportation Allowance.
  2. Volunteer must have completed ACT's Program volunteer admissions process: Application, Interview, Reference Checks, Core Skills Training and Program-Specific Training.
  3. Before being eligible to receive the letter a volunteer must complete a probationary period of 3 months following a successful completion of Core SkillsTraining.
  4. Volunteers who are not required to complete Core Skills Training (e.g. Development, Finance and Administration), must fulfill a probationary period of 3 months commencing on the date of their placement before being eligible to receive the letter.
  5. The writing of letters is to be centralized through the Program Volunteer Coordinator/Development Volunteer Coordinator (as applicable). All inquiries regarding eligibility will be referred to Volunteer Resources.
  6. If the volunteer is inactive or on a leave of absence for a period of 3 months or more, the ODSP/Ontario Works caseworker will be contacted by Volunteer Resources and the file will be closed.
