Member Bios

Beth Wilson
Beth Wilson is a researcher with the Community Social Planning Council of Toronto (CSPC-T). CSPC-T is a non-profit community agency engaged in community-based research, policy analysis, community mobilization and capacity building aimed at increasing the quality of life of Toronto residents. Her research work includes a focus on income security, food security, access to community services, working conditions, housing and community space. Beth completed a Master of Social Work from the University of Toronto in 2002.

Clemon George
Clemon describes himself as a Social Epidemiologist, interested in the ways that social, economic and political factors, as well as individual factors, impact on the health of people and communities. His research and community interests focus on African and Caribbean peoples in Canada, marginalized communities such as gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men, immigrants/migrants and other individuals. He is a member of the African and Caribbean Council on HIV in Ontario (ACCHO). He sits on the Ontario gay men’s HIV strategy planning committee, which makes recommendations to the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care on the prevention efforts directed to gay men. Dr. George also contributes to scientific initiatives at the Ontario HIV Treatment Network (OHTN). Clemon has his PhD in epidemiology from Laval University.

James Murray
James Murray is a Senior Policy Analyst with the AIDS Bureau, Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, where he has worked since August 2003. Prior to working at the AIDS Bureau, James worked for seven years in HIV prevention with gay men at the AIDS Committee of Toronto (ACT). Through this work, James has had the opportunity to be involved in a number of research projects looking at the sexual health of gay men.

John Maxwell
John Maxwell is the Director of Programs and Services at ACT. John has been working in the community-based HIV/AIDS movement for over 15 years. He has extensive experience in the area of HIV prevention for gay and bisexual men, and has been an active participant in many community-based research projects. In addition to his work at ACT, he is a member of numerous local, provincial and national and international HIV/AIDS working groups.

Maurice Poon
Maurice Kwong-Lai Poon is a lecturer in the School of Social Work at York University and Chair of the Advisory Research Committee at Asian Community AIDS Services. His current research focuses on gay Asian diasporic identities and politics, the social construction of violence in gay intimate relationships, and HIV/AIDS issues related to Asian men who have sex with men. He is active in the development of human services for the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered Asian community in Toronto.

Sarah Flicker
Sarah Flicker is a faculty member at York University in Toronto. Previously Sarah was the Director of Research at the Wellesley Institute. She holds a doctorate in Social Science and Health from the University of Toronto's Department of Public Health Sciences. She has been an active member of the TeenNet Research Group throughout her doctoral studies. Her research interests are in the areas of youth health, health promotion, HIV and community-based participatory research. Sarah sits on a number of community boards and believes strongly in community partnerships for research and action.

Shelley Cleverly
Shelley Cleverly is the Director of Community Based Research for the Ontario AIDS Network (OAN). Shelley has twenty three years of experience working in the not-for-profit sector, and 15 years experience facilitating community based research projects and other community based development initiatives. Her past work has included projects about community capacity, (dis)ability, empowerment, mental health services, community-driven resource allocation, education support for vulnerable youth, and social inclusion. In her role with the OAN, Shelley has supported CBR projects in relation to a variety of stakeholder issues including: the involvement of people living with HIV/AIDS in work of the HIV/AIDS movement; the creation of community based access to mindfulness, art, narrative therapies; HIV/AIDS prevention and leadership development for youth; and service model development for HIV positive women in underserved parts of Toronto. Shelley has also collaborated with OHTN and the CLEAR Unit to develop and launch ‘Compass’, an HIV/AIDS CBR newsletter.

Winston Husbands
Winston Husbands is Director of Research at ACT, and Co-Chair of ACCHO. His current research focuses on improving the knowledge base for HIV prevention among gay and bisexual men, especially Black/African/Caribbean men, and community responses to HIV/AIDS among African and Caribbean communities. He is involved in ACCHO’s initiatives to improve service providers’ capacity to work with African and Caribbean communities. In 2006-2007, he chaired the team that developed ACCHO’s Keep it alive HIV prevention campaign for African and Caribbean communities in Ontario.
