Purpose | Board members are responsible for governance and direction setting. Members act in a volunteer capacity and serve without remuneration or profit. Members must commit to and understand the purpose, policies, programs and financial position of the organization, as well as work collaboratively with management, staff and volunteers. Members represent the organization in the community, as appropriate and should maintain an awareness of community issues and changing needs. | ||

Time Commitment | 3 hours per week for 24 months Details: Board members work on average 10 hours per month depending on their individual responsibilities including: monthly board meetings, standing committee meetings, ad hoc groups and special events. | ||
Duties | The Volunteer will: * Formulate and approve strategic plan (long range goals/objectives) * Formulate and adopt policy * Adopt and monitor the organization's operating budget, financial development and insurance program * Maintain positive, open relations with our communities and other external agencies. * Monitor the achievements of organization's goals and objectives. * Select, employ, assess, and if necessary, dismiss the executive director * Performs legal responsibilities such as overseeing changes in by-laws, signing contracts, opening and closing accounts, acquisitions or sale of real estate. * Approve and monitor the fundraising strategy * Participate actively in board-related affairs of the organization * Maintain the lines of communication between board, staff and volunteers * Understand and support the roles and responsibilities of board and staff * Maintain board business confidentiality * Attend all board meetings and committee meetings, training sessions and special meetings as appropriate * Serve on committees, ad hoc groups or accept special assignments as either chair or member, where appropriate * Participate in fundraising campaigns * Speak positively about the organization within the community * Attend ACT special public events | ||
Personal Qualities and Skills | Required Qualities & Skills: * Member of the organization * Elected by the membership at the Annual General Meeting * Demonstrated interest in communities * Willingness to commit time, energy and expertise to the work of the organization * Demonstrated special skills, knowledge and expertise identified as needed by Board * Ability to represent specific constituencies and interpret community needs * Knowledge of and/or experience with ACT * Affected by or living with HIV | ||
