The AIDS Committee of Toronto (ACT) delivers responsive, effective, and valued community-based HIV support services and education, prevention, outreach and fundraising programs that promote the health, well-being, worth and rights of individuals and communities living with, affected by and at risk for HIV/AIDS, and increase awareness of HIV/AIDS.

Mission Statement


The Library provides information to people and organizations who want to know about the psychosocial aspects of living with or being affected by HIV/AIDS. We collect and organize information that is appropriate to the needs of our clients and that supports the prevention, education, and support work done at ACT.





Purpose


To retrieve articles from university libraries and index them for the Information Files. Many of articles on HIV and AIDS are published in academic journals to which the ACT Library does not subscribe. The volunteer researcher tracks down many of these articles at university libraries, copies them and indexes them for our Information Files.


Benefits


This research position can be a good way to keep current on cutting edge development in HIV/AIDS research.


Time Commitment


4 hours per week
for 6 months


Duties


The Volunteer will:
-Locate and photocopy articles in university research libraries
-Index these articles using "The Guide to the Information Files"


Personal Qualities
and Skills


Required Qualities & Skills:
-Access to a major university library system (University of Toronto, York University)
-Access to photocopier at the library
-Familiarity with the library catalogues of a major university
-Good reading comprehension skills
-Good analytical skills
-Familiarity with HIV and AIDS issues

Volunteer Core Skills Training, Program-Specific Training, On-the-job Training with Supervisor and/or other Volunteers
