Despite the changes in behaviour that gay and bisexual men have adopted over the past 21 years in response to HIV/AIDS, some men are finding it difficult to maintain safer behaviours all the time. And, gay and bisexual men continue to the community most affected by HIV/AIDS here in Toronto.
Often, men may make assumptions about their partners - assumptions that may increase their risk for getting or transmitting HIV. Funding was made available to AIDS Vancouver, the lead organization in this national initiative, together with organizations from six Canadian cities – Vancouver, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Toronto, Montreal and Halifax – to coordinate and launch a national HIV prevention campaign for gay men.
The purpose of the "How do you Know What you Know?" or "Assumptions" campaign is to challenge the assumptions men make when they have sex with each other – assumptions that may increase their risk for transmitting or contracting HIV. The AIDS Committee of Toronto (ACT) was able to secure a sizeable funding commitment from the Ontario Ministry of Health & Long-Term Care to expand the scope of the campaign both in Toronto, and allow the campaign to expand into 16 other cities across the province.
