O Comitê de AIDS de Toronto (AIDS Committe of Toronto - ACT) é uma organização com base comunitária, sem fins lucrativos, que oferece serviços de promoção à saúde, apoio, educação e advocacia para pessoas que vivem com o VIH/HIV (SIDA/AIDS) e as quais correm o risco de contrair o vírus da SIDA/AIDS. O ACT foi fundado em Julho de 1983, de um fórum organizado pelo um grupo de pessoas homosexuais (gay men and lesbians) que trabalham na àrea de saúde, respondendo assim a uma doença misteriosa (na altura desconhecida) no Canadá, a qual estava afetando os homens homosexuais (gay men).
The AIDS Committee of Toronto (ACT) is a community-based charitable organization that provides support, HIV prevention, and education services for people living with and at risk for HIV/AIDS. ACT was created July 19th, 1983. ACT was formed out of a community forum held by “Gays in the Health Care,” in response to a new and mysterious disease affecting gay men.
O vírus do VIH/HIV foi descoberto em 1984, e o teste surgiu logo depois da descoberta do vírus. Alguns anos depois, pessoas infectadas com o VIH/HIV, necessitando apoio e informação sobre este vírus principiou a aumentar rápidamente e tornou-se um número superior aos que já se encontravam com a SIDA/AIDS, ou seja, na fase final desta doença) (full-blown AIDS). O ACT iniciou o seu trabalho com um número muito baixo de funcionários, os quais desempehavam duplas funcões. Mais tarde os funcionários do ACT passaram então a ter posições mais específicas e especializadas. Com o decorrer do tempo, o ACT também teve que criar estructuras, estatutos e outras regras para assim governar esta organização de serviços de programas de SIDA/AIDS. O ACT foi sempre e continua a ser uma organização de caráter voluntário.
HIV (the virus that causes AIDS) was discovered in 1984, with a test available soon after. Within a few years, able-bodied people with HIV needing both support and education began to outnumber those with full-blown AIDS. ACT began with very few staff, all of whom did just about everything. Specialization came later, as did the need for a more formal structure with standards, policies and procedures. ACT has always been (and continues to be) heavily volunteer-based.
ACT oferece um variado leque de serviços de apoio, programs de prevenção com ênfase em homens que têm relações sexuais com homens, a mulheres e jovens em risco de contrair o VIH/HIV.
Today, ACT provides a range of supportive services and HIV prevention programs targeting gay and bisexual men and other men who have sex with men, at risk women and at-risk youth.
O ACT trabalha em parceria com outras organizações comunitárias de SIDA/AIDS a nível local, provincial e nacional. O ACT é membro da Canadian AIDS Society e da Ontario AIDS Network. O ACT foi também o fundador da Gay Men’s Education Network of Toronto, da Women’s Outreach Network e do Youth and HIV/AIDS Network. O ACT é também membro do VIVER, a Coaligação de VIH/SIDA/AIDS de Língua Portuguesa, a qual trabalha em parceria com o ACT e outras organizações comunitárias dedicadas às necessidades, apoio, prevenção e educação sobre o VIH/HIV, na comunidade de língua Portuguesa de Toronto. Além destas parcerias de trabalho, o ACT trabalha em colaboração com uma variedade de organizações com a finalidade de desenvolver programs e serviços para a toda a comunidades da cidade de Toronto.
ACT works in collaboration with many AIDS and social service organizations, and is involved in HIV/AIDS networks nationally and provincially. ACT is a member of the Canadian AIDS Society and the Ontario AIDS Network. ACT is a founding member of the Gay Men’s Education Network of Toronto (now called the M2Men Network), the Women’s Outreach Network and the Youth and HIV/AIDS Network. ACT is also a member of VIVER (the Portuguese-speaking HIV/AIDS Coalition) which brings together service providers and agencies committed to raising awareness of, and support for, HIV education and support services in Toronto’s diverse Portuguese-speaking communities. In addition to networking, ACT works collaboratively with a variety of agencies to develop and deliver programs.
Em 15 de Maio de 1997, foi iniciado um fórum sobre o impacto da epedemia de VIH/SIDA (HIV/AIDS) nas comunidades de língua Portuguesa de Toronto. Os homens homosexuais de língua Portuguesa eram particularmente afetados devido à marginalização nas comunidades de língua Portuguesa e de seu contato limitado com a comunidade homosexual. Como consequência, foi estabelecida a organização VIVER, uma Coligação de língua Portuguesa para HIV/AIDS. Em 1998, a VIVER e o ACT entraram em um acordo formal para equacionar e resolver as necessidades das comunidades de língua Portuguesa da GTA. Desde então, o ACT tem supervisionado o Programa de Educação e Prevenção para Homens que tem relações sexuais com outros homens, (the Portuguese-speaking Men’s Outreach Program), e o Program para o Desenvolvimento das Comunidades de Língua Portuguesa (The Portuguese-speaking Community Development Program).
On May 15th, 1997, a community forum took place to examine the impact of HIV/AIDS on Toronto’s Portuguese-speaking communities. Present were community members, and staff from a variety of Portuguese-speaking service organizations in the city. It was noted that HIV/AIDS services for Portuguese-speaking communities were minimal. Education for Portuguese-speaking MSM (men who have sex with men) was needed, given the marginalization of these men in Portuguese-speaking communities and their limited contact with the broader gay community. Following this forum, VIVER (Portuguese-speaking HIV/AIDS Coalition) was established. In 1998, VIVER and ACT entered in to a formal arrangement to address the needs of Portuguese-speaking communities in the city. Since then, ACT has sponsored the city-funded Portuguese-speaking Men’s Outreach Program, and further developed the Portuguese-speaking Community Education Program.
