SIDA/AIDS é a sigla (abreviatura/acrónimo), em Português, para Síndrome de Imunodeficiência Adquirida. SIDA usa-se em quase todos os países que falam a língua portuguesa, exceto no Brazil, onde se usa “AIDS” (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome.) tal qual como se usa em English. A SIDA/AIDS, é uma condição em que o sistema imunológico humano fica fraco e/ou incapaz de se proteger contra infecções. É importante saber que uma pessoa pode viver por muito tempo com o VIH/HIV e/ou com a SIDA/AIDS. Presentemente, ainda não existe cura para a SIDA/AIDS.
SIDA is the Portuguese term for "Síndroma de Imunodeficiência Adquírida" and is used in most of the Portuguese-speaking world except Brazil. In Brazil the English term for the same illness (AIDS - Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) is more widely understood and used. AIDS is a medical condition where the human body’s immune system is unable to function, and consequently finds it difficult to hold back infections. It is important to note that people with AIDS can live for very long periods of time; however, there is currently no cure for AIDS.
VIH é a sigla (abreviatura/ acrónimo) para Vírus da Imunodeficiência Humana. Em Inglês é chamado HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) e, é o vírus que causa a AIDS/SIDA. Este vírus encontra-se no sangue, no sémen /sêmen, nas secreções vaginais e no leite materno.
