What is Safer Sex?
Safer sex is any kind of sexual activity that reduces the chances of getting - or giving – HIV.
Many things – such as hugging, kissing, massage and touching – are completely safe. No one ever got HIV from these sexual activities.
For other sexual activities, the chances are small. These activities (like performing oral sex on someone) are considered “low risk”. Oral sex can be made even safer by using a latex condom for oral sex on a man, or a latex barrier (such as a dental dam) for oral sex on a woman.
Having anal or vaginal sex without a condom is an easy way to become infected, or to infect someone else with HIV. These are considered “high risk” sexual activities. They can be made much safer by using a latex condom and water-based lubricant.
